A fictional story published in a Chinese newspaper, Endless Magic coming to China takes the form of a news report. This surprising public intervention continues a thread of Voet’s practice where history and imagination coincide. The story of a Magiccomo alludes to a reverse cultural influence between Europe and East Asia, particularly present in the true origins of the definitively Italian staple pasta to its actual origins in noodles brought from China along the silk road. It also draws on the legacy of other soft colonialisms that are embedded in international aid. These, among, other contexts are explored in this narrative where fiction acts a method to make sense of otherwise highly complex issues of cultural transactions.
